For many of our patients—especially those who have great hearing in low frequencies but struggle with high-frequency loss—finding the balance between hearing clearly and feeling comfortable is a clinical challenge. Recently, we’ve been transitioning patients from standard “domes” to custom-made ear Molds to solve feedback (whistling) issues.

Why Does a Deep Mold Feel More Natural?
It seems counterintuitive. You might think that putting something deeper into your ear would make you feel more plugged up. However, the science of acoustics tells a different story.
Your ear canal is made of two parts: the outer two-thirds is flexible cartilage, and the inner third is hard bone. When you speak, the vibration of your jaw and throat actually causes the cartilaginous walls of your ear canal to vibrate.
• The Problem with Short Molds: A short, shallow ear mold acts like a cap on a bottle. It traps those vibrations in the canal, bouncing them back toward your eardrum. This creates that artificial bass boost that makes your voice sound strange.
• The Deep Mold Solution: A “deep fit” mold travels past the second bend of your ear canal to rest near the bony portion. Because the bone doesn’t vibrate when you talk, and the mold fills the space where vibrations usually occur, the “trapped air” volume is minimized. The result? Your voice sounds much more natural.
Solving the Whistle (Feedback)
The primary reason we move patients to a custom mold is to stop feedback. When you have a severe high-frequency hearing loss, your hearing aid has to work very hard to provide power in those high pitches. With a standard rubber dome, that sound often “leaks” out of the ear and gets picked up by the hearing aid microphone, causing a piercing whistle.
A custom Mold provides a superior seal. By opting for a deeper Mold, we achieve two things:
1. Eliminate the Whistle: The seal is tighter and further down the canal, preventing sound leakage.
2. Increase Clarity: Because the sound is delivered closer to your eardrum, you get better clarity and “punch” in the high frequencies where you need it most.
