Ear Wax Removal.
This item cannot be Bulk Billed.
No Medicare code for Audiologists means that this service can't be bulk billed. If there is no wax, we do not charge a fee.
If the service takes multiple attempts you only pay on comletion.
In very rare instances, the ear canal is too narrow or the wax softening agent doesn't soften the wax enough. If this is the case at the second appointment still, you would be re-referred back to your GP to consider an ENT referral or irrigation options at the GP clinic.
If you meet the chronic health criterion, your GP may be able to put you on a care plan and give you five visits to allied health in total. You then have the option to use a visit for Audiology and potentially ear wax removal via microsuction, which is a popular choice for those looking to buy hearing aids in Bundaberg and get assistance with ear health.
Unless you have a hole in your ear drum (perforation), using a wax softening agent like Waxol or Cerumol gives your Audiologist a better chance for removal. I would recommend a minimum of three days, morning and night. Please note this will lead to the wax moving into a softer form and may cause additional temporary hearing impairment until it is removed.
It's normal and healthy for the ear to produce ear wax. This helps the ear canal protect against water and infection. If it's causing you or your hearing aids any problems, we can generally remove it via microsuction (no water) or manual curets.
Impacted wax is a common issue, particularly if you wear hearing aids like I do, as the insertion of the hearing aids pushes the wax a bit further in every single day. While this can be annoying, wax impaction generally isn't a medical emergency. We understand that it can be uncomfortable and will try to get you in as soon as we are able.
Please bear in mind that seeing an ENT specialist for the same procedure can take months to obtain an appointment. Please be assured we will see you as soon as we possibly can, but waitlists can be a couple of weeks long. Another option is to talk to your GP about the suitability of irrigation (removal with water), but that method is a little riskier with a higher chance of perforating an ear drum.
Some common symptoms of an ear blocked by wax include:
- Temporary Hearing Loss
- Tinnitus
- Full Sensation
- Ear Pain
- Poor outcomes for hearing aid users as the tubing and mic ports get clogged up
- Balance Issues
- Poor Localization (ability to tell where sounds are coming from)
- Mental Distress from straining to hear
The microsuction ear wax removal technique involves a small machine like a tiny vacuum cleaner, which sucks the wax out without using water like in irrigation techniques, and is generally considered to be the safer of the two common methods used. Conveniently, this service is offered by local and independent Audiologist Dylan Deinert in Bundaberg West.
It can be a little bit uncomfortable but generally isn't painful. The procedure is, however, very loud.
To get to the bottom of why the ears felt blocked without wax, we would ask you to get a GP referral and return for a diagnostic hearing speech and middle ear test. Pensioners may also be able to use the Hearing Service Program to access testing. These tests help inform us if there is anything that needs to be treated in the outer or middle ear. This could include things like ear infection (Glue Ear), Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, fungal or outer ear infections, or it could be true hearing loss.
