Ear wax removal is not bulk billed. We book and charge in 15 minute blocks, and all prices include GST.
- Private and Hearing Services Program clients: $40 for 15 minutes, $80 for 30 minutes
- Department of Veterans’ Affairs clients: $20 for 15 minutes, $40 for 30 minutes
No wax, no charge
If we look and there is no wax to remove, there is no charge. If the wax cannot be safely cleared and you need to be referred on to an ENT specialist, there is no charge for that appointment either. We would rather send you in the right direction than bill you for a problem we could not solve.
Ear wax removal via microsuction — safe and effective.
Ear blockages are most commonly caused by ear wax build-up (cerumen impaction), debris, or fluid trapped in the ear canal. When ear wax becomes impacted, it can cause muffled hearing, blocked ears, pressure or fullness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), itchiness, discomfort, dizziness, or sudden hearing loss. Many people describe the sensation as feeling “underwater” or like their ear won’t pop. Impacted ear wax can also reduce hearing aid performance, causing feedback (whistling) and poor sound clarity.

Microsuction ear wax removal is widely regarded as the safest and most effective treatment for blocked ears. Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction is a dry, water-free ear cleaning procedure, which significantly reduces the risk of infection, vertigo, and complications.
Using precise medical suction under direct visual guidance with magnification or an HD video otoscope, impacted ear wax is gently and accurately removed while protecting the delicate ear canal and eardrum.

How to keep the appointment short, and cheaper
Softening the wax for a few days before your appointment can make a real difference. Softer wax comes away faster, which often means a 15 minute appointment rather than 30, and half the cost.
Ask your pharmacist which wax softening drops suit you. They know your medications and your medical history, so they are better placed than we are to recommend a product. Start a few days before you come in.
If an appointment runs past 15 minutes it moves into the next block, so this is worth doing.
Common questions
Is ear wax removal covered by Medicare?
Not when it is done here. Microsuction at our clinic is a private service and there is no Medicare rebate for it, which is why we publish our prices above. If your GP removes wax as part of a consultation, the consultation itself is covered by Medicare in the usual way. Department of Veterans’ Affairs clients are charged at the reduced rate shown above.
Does the GP still do ear wax removal?
Many still do, and if your GP is happy to remove it for you, that is a perfectly good option. Some practices have moved away from it, and some will send you elsewhere if the wax is hard, impacted, or sitting against the eardrum.
The difference is usually the method. Wax removal in general practice is often done by syringing, which flushes the ear with water. Microsuction is dry, and we work under magnification or an HD video otoscope so we can see exactly what we are doing the whole time. That matters if you have a perforation, grommets, a history of ear surgery, or a canal that has been troublesome in the past.
You do not need a referral to come to us, and we are glad to send a note back to your GP afterwards if you would like us to.
