Are you applying for your white card for hearing / Tinnitus?

If you are former ADF personnel or a veteran experiencing hearing loss or tinnitus, we strongly recommend contacting a local DVA Advocate to support your claim. At AIM Hearing Bundaberg, we work closely with experienced advocates from:

  • RSL Sub Branch Drop-In Centre (Takalvan Street)

  • RSL Wide Bay & Burnett District Office (Maryborough Street)

  • Bundaberg Legacy (Williams Road)

  • Defence Veterans Drop-In Centre (cnr Pitt & May Street)

  • As well as advocates across Hervey Bay, Gladstone, Agnes Waters and surrounding regions

As part of your DVA claim process, we provide a comprehensive hearing and tinnitus assessment. If clinically indicated, we will prepare a detailed audiology report recommending that hearing loss and/or tinnitus be accepted as a condition on your DVA White Card. This report is sent to your GP for completion and signature before being returned to your advocate for submission.

It is important to personally deliver or promptly post the signed documentation to your advocate to avoid delays. While DVA may approve your condition under PAMT (Prior Approval for Medical Treatment), hearing treatment is delivered through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program (HSP). As DVA and HSP operate on separate federal systems, additional documentation must be forwarded to the HSP to generate your DVA Hearing Services voucher.

At AIM Hearing Bundaberg, we guide you through every step to ensure your veteran hearing rehabilitation pathway is seamless, compliant, and stress-free — so no one falls through the cracks.

Already got a White Card but don't have Hearing Loss and / Or Tinnitus on it?

If you already hold a DVA White Card, the process for accessing hearing services is much faster and more straightforward. Simply visit AIM Hearing Bundaberg, and our experienced team will guide you through the next steps to access your DVA-funded hearing assessment and treatment.

We will confirm your eligibility, assist with the required documentation, and ensure your details are correctly registered through the Hearing Services Program (HSP) so a DVA Hearing Voucher can be issued. From there, we can arrange your comprehensive hearing test and begin your personalised hearing rehabilitation plan.

If you’re a veteran with a White Card seeking a hearing test in Bundaberg or support for hearing loss or tinnitus, AIM Hearing makes the process simple, compliant, and stress-free.

DVA Hearing Aids

DVA Hearing Aids – What Veterans Need to Know

If you are a veteran with hearing loss accepted as a specific condition on your DVA White Card or Gold Card, you should not have to pay out of pocket for clinically appropriate DVA-funded hearing aids. At AIM Hearing Bundaberg, we advocate strongly to ensure eligible veterans receive the hearing treatment they are entitled to.

In some cases, basic DVA hearing aids may not be suitable. For example, a veteran still working in civilian employment may require advanced hearing aid technology to perform effectively in background noise. Others with reduced hand dexterity may need rechargeable hearing aids instead of battery-operated devices.

Where clinically justified, we can submit an application to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) requesting approval for higher-level or specific hearing technology. This process typically requires supporting documentation from your GP or relevant specialist. Please note that this is an application process and approval is determined by DVA policy.

The current generation of fully funded DVA hearing aids includes modern features such as Bluetooth connectivity and improved noise management. In more complex listening situations, we can also apply for Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) under the DVA Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP) to further enhance speech clarity.

At AIM Hearing Bundaberg, we ensure veterans receive transparent advice, appropriate advocacy, and access to the best possible hearing solutions.

Important Information About DVA Hearing Aid Reimbursement

There is ongoing misinformation suggesting that veterans can purchase higher-level hearing aids privately and then claim reimbursement from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). This is incorrect.

The DVA does not reimburse privately purchased hearing aids unless the devices have been formally approved through the correct DVA application and authorisation process prior to fitting. If you choose to privately fund upgraded hearing aid technology without DVA approval, you will not be able to submit a claim for reimbursement afterward.

All DVA-funded hearing aids and assistive listening devices must be prescribed, documented, and approved under official DVA pathways, including the Hearing Services Program (HSP) and, where applicable, the Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP).

At AIM Hearing Bundaberg, we provide clear, accurate advice regarding DVA hearing aid eligibility, upgrade applications, and funding processes — ensuring veterans avoid unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses based on incorrect information.

DVA Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP) – Hearing Support for Veterans

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP) provides eligible veterans, war widows/widowers, and dependants with approved aids and equipment to help them live safely and independently.

Under the DVA RAP program, certain hearing-related Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) may be available to improve communication and hearing performance in specific environments. These can include:

  • Remote/table microphones to improve speech understanding in background noise

  • Partner microphones for clearer one-on-one conversations

  • TV streamers and television listening devices

  • Devices that support tinnitus management and sound therapy to assist with sleep and reduce tinnitus awareness

These devices are designed to complement your hearing aids and improve real-world listening outcomes in social settings, at home, and in complex acoustic environments.

At AIM Hearing Bundaberg, our team is highly experienced in navigating the DVA RAP application process. We complete applications on your behalf, ensuring they meet clinical justification requirements and DVA program guidelines, so you can access the hearing support you are entitled to with minimal stress and paperwork.
