Why They Can’t Hear You From the Kitchen

A guide for the partners, families and friends of hearing aid wearers

There is one conversation we have almost every day at AIM Hearing. It usually starts like this:

“The hearing aids don’t seem to be working properly. I called out to him from the kitchen, and he didn’t hear a word.”

Or: “I was talking to her from the hallway, and she just ignored me.”

Or the one that stings a little: “I don’t know why I bothered spending the money.”

Here is the reassuring part. In the overwhelming majority of these cases, there is nothing wrong with the hearing aids. They are doing exactly what they were designed to do. What has changed is not the technology — it’s the acoustics of the situation.

This article is written for you: the wife, the husband, the son, the daughter, the friend. Not for the person wearing the hearing aids. Because once you understand what is actually happening to your voice as it travels across the house, a handful of small changes on your part will do more for their hearing than almost anything we can adjust in the clinic.

First, what a hearing aid actually is

A hearing aid is not a replacement ear. It is a very sophisticated microphone, sitting behind or in the ear, that picks up the sound arriving at that point and amplifies it in a way tailored to that person’s hearing loss.

That word — arriving — is the whole story.

A hearing aid can only work with the sound that reaches it. If your voice arrives at their ear faint, muffled and smeared, the hearing aid will faithfully amplify a faint, muffled, smeared version of your voice. It cannot reconstruct what was lost on the journey. Nothing can.

So the real question isn’t, “Why aren’t the hearing aids working?” It’s “What happened to my voice on its way across the house?”

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

The journey your voice has to make

Picture calling out to your partner from the kitchen while they’re sitting in the lounge room. Before your voice reaches their hearing aids, it has to:

  • Travel several metres
  • Pass through a doorway, or around a corner
  • Bounce off walls, floors, ceilings and benchtops
  • Compete with the television, the tap, the exhaust fan, the air conditioner
  • Set off in the direction you are facing – which is usually not towards them

By the time it arrives, your voice is not simply quieter. It is less clear. Those are two different problems, and the second one is the one nobody talks about.

Your voice gets weaker very fast

Sound spreads out as it travels, and the further it goes, the more thinly that energy is spread. The drop is much steeper than most people expect.

The rule of thumb acousticians use is that every time you double the distance, the sound level drops by about 6 decibels. That doesn’t sound dramatic until you follow it across a room. Speaking at a normal, comfortable level:

By the time you’re calling from the kitchen while they’re in the lounge, your ordinary speaking voice is arriving at their ear at close to whisper level – and it’s competing with the kettle, the fan and the television.

Their hearing aids will amplify that faint whisper. But amplifying something faint doesn’t make it clear. It just makes it a louder version of something already too degraded to understand.

It doesn’t just get quieter. It gets blurrier.

This is the part almost nobody knows, and it is the most important thing in this article.

Speech is made of two very different kinds of sound.

Vowels – the ‘ah’, ‘oh’, and ‘ee’ sounds – are low-pitched and carry a lot of energy. They travel well. They go around corners, through doorways, and even through walls.

Consonants — s, f, th, k, t, sh — are high-pitched and carry very little energy. They are quiet, quick and fragile. They fade first over distance, they are the first thing swallowed by background noise, and they are the first thing blocked by a wall.

The vowels carry the volume. The consonants carry the meaning.

Take the consonants out of “Did you take the bins out?”, and what arrives is something like “i-oo-ay-e-i-ow?” — clearly a voice, clearly a question, clearly aimed at them. But the actual words are gone.

This is why your partner will say, “I can hear you; I just can’t understand you.” They are not being difficult and they are not making excuses. They are describing exactly what arrived.

It is also why shouting doesn’t help. Shouting makes the vowels louder. It does not restore the consonants — and it distorts your voice and your face, which makes things worse. More on faces shortly.

Hallways, tiled floors and hard rooms

Now add the room itself.

Speak in an open field, and your voice travels straight to the listener — that is the end of it. Indoors, only part of your voice takes the direct route. The rest bounces off walls, ceilings, tiles, windows and the kitchen splashback and arrives a fraction of a second later.

Those delayed copies pile on top of the direct sound and smear it. Acousticians call it reverberation. You have heard it in a church hall or an indoor pool.

A hallway is close to a worst-case. It is narrow, usually hard-surfaced, and it channels sound along its length while reflecting it off every surface on the way. Your voice arrives at the far end late, layered over itself, with the crisp consonants long gone.

Every room has a point — a critical distance — beyond which the listener is hearing more bounced sound than direct sound. Past that point, moving further away doesn’t just make things quieter. It makes them progressively muddier.

Someone with typical hearing can usually let their brain sort the reflections out. For someone with hearing loss, reverberation blurs words together. Modern hearing aids have clever noise management, but they cannot untangle a voice the room has already scrambled.

This is why a person can do beautifully in a quiet consulting room at our clinic and still struggle at home in a kitchen with tiled floors and hard benchtops.

Why walls are worse than distance

Talking from another room is a different problem again and a bigger one.

A wall doesn’t reduce all sound equally. Low frequencies pass through it relatively well — which is why you can hear the bass from next door’s stereo but not the tune. High frequencies are largely stopped.

So a wall acts as a filter that removes precisely the consonants your partner needs, while letting through exactly the vowel energy that tells them somebody said something.

The result is the interaction you both know too well. You speak from the bedroom. They call back, “What?” You repeat it, a bit louder. They call back “What?” again. You get frustrated, they get embarrassed, and by the third attempt neither of you is enjoying it.

They genuinely heard you. They simply never received the words.

So why does facing them change everything?

We all grew up being told to look at someone when we’re talking to them. Most of us learned it as a manners rule. It turns out to be an acoustic and neurological one as well — and there are three separate reasons it works.

1. The signal arrives in the best possible condition

When you are facing someone from a metre or two away, your voice travels in a straight, short, direct line to their ears. Minimal distance loss. Minimal reverberation. The consonants survive the trip.

When you speak while facing away, most of your voice travels forward — away from the person you are trying to reach. Your own head and body then block part of what is left. The listener receives a weakened, filtered version before distance and background noise have even had their turn.

There is a bonus, too. Most modern hearing aids use directional microphones — deliberately designed to favour sound from in front of the wearer and suppress sound from behind and to the sides. That is a huge advantage in a noisy café, but it means the technology only pays off when the person they are listening to is actually in front of them.

Standing behind your partner and speaking to the back of their head is, in a very literal sense, talking into the part of the hearing aid designed to ignore you.

2. Their brain is ready to listen

Hearing is passive. Listening is active, and it takes effort.

When someone with hearing loss is following a conversation, their brain is doing serious work — filling gaps, predicting words, and checking guesses against context. That process needs a running start.

If you begin a sentence while they don’t know you’re speaking, the first several words go by before their attention arrives. By the time they have tuned in, they have missed the subject of the sentence and are trying to reconstruct it from the tail end.

Saying their name and waiting for them to look up costs you two seconds and gives their brain the running start it needs.

3. Their eyes fill in what their ears missed

This is the one that surprises people most.

You do not need to be a trained lipreader to get enormous benefit from watching a speaker’s face. Every one of us does it, all the time, without noticing. The brain merges what it sees with what it hears and treats them as a single stream of information.

And the visual information is exactly the information that goes missing first. Many of the consonants that fade over distance – p, b, f, th, sh – are highly visible on the lips. What the ear loses, the eye can often recover.

This has been well established since a landmark 1954 study by Sumby and Pollack, which showed that being able to see the speaker’s face dramatically improved how much of a message listeners understood in noisy conditions. Decades of research since then have confirmed and extended it.

Add facial expression, eyebrows, head movement and gesture – all the context that tells them whether this is a question, a joke or a request – and a visible face is worth more to your partner than almost any adjustment we could make to their hearing aids.

Three signals: direct sound, focused attention, and a visible face. Take away the face and you have removed a third of the system.

What hearing aids can and cannot do

Hearing aids amplify and process sound according to the wearer’s hearing loss. They make speech more accessible, they improve communication, and they genuinely improve quality of life. They are worth every cent.

But it is worth being honest about the limits. Hearing aids cannot:

  • Restore damaged hearing to normal
  • Remove every unwanted sound
  • Make distant speech sound as clear as nearby speech
  • Reliably overcome walls, closed doors or running appliances
  • Replace the information gained from seeing the speaker’s face
  • Know that a voice from another room matters more than the sounds nearby

That last one is worth sitting with. A hearing aid has no way of knowing that the faint voice two rooms away is your wife asking a question, while the loud noise besides it is only the dishwasher. It has no idea what matters to the person wearing it. Only the wearer’s brain knows that — and it can only act on what actually arrives.

If your partner struggles when you call from the kitchen, it very rarely means the hearing aids are faulty. It means they were handed a poor-quality signal. The clearer the sound reaching them, the more they can do.

What this looks like at home

None of this takes effort so much as habit. A fortnight of consciously doing it and it becomes automatic.

  • Get in the same room first. This is the single biggest one. Never start a sentence from another room, from the hallway, or from behind them.
  • Say their name and wait for them to turn. Two seconds. Then speak. A light touch on the arm works just as well.
  • Aim for one to two metres. Close enough that your voice arrives intact, not so close that it is uncomfortable.
  • Let them see your face. Don’t talk while you are at the sink, reading the paper, driving, or with your back turned.
  • Watch the light. If you are standing in front of a bright window, your face is in silhouette. Turn around so the light falls on you.
  • Kill the competition first. Turn off the tap, the extractor fan, and the radio. Mute the television before you start – not halfway through.
  • Speak clearly, but naturally. Speak at a steady pace with small pauses between ideas. There is no need to shout or to exaggerate your mouth movements — over-mouth-ing distorts the very lip shapes they are reading.
  • Rephrase rather than repeat. If they didn’t get it the second time, saying the same words louder won’t work. Say it differently: “the bins” becomes “rubbish night — is it tonight?” A new set of words is a fresh chance.
  • Signal the topic. Starting with “About Saturday—” lets their brain load the right vocabulary before the details arrive.
  • Don’t cover your mouth, and try not to eat or chew while you are talking.

This is for your benefit too

It is easy to frame all of this as something you do for them. It isn’t, entirely.

Repeating yourself four times a day is exhausting. So is being misheard, or having a small logistical question turn into a flat conversation that neither of you wanted. Over months and years that friction quietly reshapes how a household talks — fewer offhand remarks, less banter across the room, more short, functional exchanges and less of the incidental conversation that relationships actually run on.

The person with hearing loss may feel embarrassed, exhausted or left out. Their partner may feel as though they are constantly repeating themselves. Over time this breeds irritation on both sides, even when neither person is doing anything deliberately wrong. The research is consistent that hearing loss affects the whole household, not only the person with the loss.

Two seconds of walking into the room and catching their eye buys back a genuine, ordinary conversation. That is a good trade for both of you.

It is the same lesson many of us were taught as children:

Look at someone when you are talking to them.

It is good manners. But for someone with hearing loss, it can also be the difference between merely hearing a voice and genuinely understanding what has been said.

When it’s worth coming in

Everything above is normal. It applies to people with excellent hearing aids that are perfectly well fitted. It is physics, not a fault.

But it is worth booking a hearing test if:

  • They are struggling even face-to-face, close up, in a quiet room. That is not acoustics, and it is worth investigating.
  • Things have changed recently. Hearing can shift, and hearing aids can drift out of adjustment or become blocked with ear wax.
  • One ear seems much worse than the other, or there is new ringing, fullness or dizziness.
  • They have stopped wearing the aids or stopped going to things they used to enjoy.

It is also worth asking us about accessories. A remote microphone that clips to your collar sends your voice straight to their hearing aids wirelessly, cutting out the distance and the room entirely. A television streamer does the same for the TV. For many households, these change daily life more than any upgrade in hearing aid model. We keep them in the clinic, and you are welcome to try them before deciding anything.

And you are very welcome at their appointment. Some of the most useful sessions we run are the ones where a partner comes along, describes the situations that are actually going wrong at home, and we solve them together. You notice things about their hearing that they do not notice themselves.

The short version

Your voice loses strength and clarity every metre it travels, loses more when it has to bounce down a hallway, and loses the most important part of itself when it has to pass through a wall.

Hearing aids amplify what arrives. They cannot rebuild what was lost on the way.

Walk into the room. Say their name. Wait for them to look up. Then talk.

It works — and it works for both of you.
